  • Eighty years is a long life. Eighty years of marriage is a testament to longevity -- and love. >> Read more trending news  Joseph Abelman and Lillian Abelman, of Mesa, Arizona, celebrated their 80th wedding anniversary this week, KNXV reported. Joseph is 101, and Lillian is 99. Joseph Abraham Abelman and Lillian Mary Williams were married in California on April 11, 1939, according to marriage records at Ancestry.com. The couple met a a California dance studio in 1937, when Joseph Abelman asked to cut in during a dance, KNXV reported. “He asked her to dance, she actually went with another date but he ended up with her,” the couple’s daughter, Karen Huff, told the television station. “Eighty years later, this is it.” The couple’s secret to their long marriage is to remember the good times and end the day with a kiss, KNXV reported. “They always kissed each other goodnight every night,” Huff told the television station. “That was the thing they always did and still do to this day.” Joseph Abelman, who was born in San Antonio on Sept. 19, 1917, had another secret. “Good cooking and a wonderful wife,” he told KNXV. Lillian Abelman was born in Los Angeles County on Sept. 3, 1920. They now have four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren and are considered the longest married couple now living in Arizona, the television station reported.
  • An Australian man was fatally attacked by his pet deer as he fed the animal, The Sydney Morning Herald reported. >> Read more trending news  Paul McDonald, 46, was feeding the deer on his property in Moyhu, in North East Victoria, on Wednesday when he was attacked, the newspaper reported. His wife, Mandi McDonald, 45, and son Ethan McDonald, 17, heard a commotion in their yard and went to investigate, according to The Age.  While Ethan McDonald went to get help, his mother entered the yard, where she was also attacked, the newspaper reported. Paul McDonald, a farmer who had owned the deer for two years, died of his injuries at the scene, the Morning Herald reported. Ethan McDonald was able to save his mother by hitting the deer in the head with a block of wood, the Australian Broadcasting Company reported. Mandi McDonald was airlifted to a Melbourne hospital and is in critical condition, the network reported. Police fatally shot the deer to protect paramedics trying to save the couple, the Morning Herald reported. Barry Howlett, of the Australian Deer Association, told the newspaper autumn is the rutting season for deer and can be dangerous to be around. 'An animal that would be otherwise docile for 10 months in the year, is an animal you really don’t want to be around for two months,' Howlett said.
  • A Florida man who fled after shooting into a home Wednesday evening grabbed a K-9 by the neck and fought with him before being arrested, the Melbourne Police Department said. >> Read more trending news  Melbourne police said they were called to a home after Philip Spurlock, 23, allegedly shot into the home before driving away on a motorcycle. Investigators said detectives in unmarked vehicles followed Spurlock at a safe distance as he drove at speeds in excess of 80 mph in a zone where the speed limit was 35 mph. Police said Spurlock ditched the motorcycle and ran into the backyard of a home, where he tried to hide behind an air-conditioning unit. Investigators said a K-9 officer closed in on Spurlock, who grabbed the K-9 dog, Brutus, around the neck with both hands and began to fight with him. Police said Spurlock was arrested and taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center to be treated for a dog bite. Spurlock was charged with shooting into an occupied dwelling, reckless driving, resisting arrest without violence and offenses against a police dog. Police said the dog is OK.
  • Two Florida middle school students are accused of drawing up a list of nine people they planned to kill, WTSP reported. >> Read more trending news  The 14-year-old girls, whose names were not released, were arrested Wednesday and charged with nine counts of conspiracy to commit murder and three counts of conspiracy to commit kidnapping, the Highland County Sheriff’s Office said. The teenagers were taken to a Florida Department of Juvenile Justice facility in Bartow, the Highland News-Sun reported. The Sheriff’s Office said a teacher at Avon Park Middle School noticed two students in her class acting “hysterical” while looking for a folder, the newspaper reported. The teacher found the folder, which was allegedly was labeled “private info,” do not open,” and “Project 11/9,” WTVT reported. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the list allegedly contained information about how people on the list would be killed and where their bodies would be buried, WFLA reported. According to an arrest affidavit, five of the pages in the folder contained detailed plans to contact nine people, WTSP reported. “The plans were written in great detail as to how they would lure the victims, kill the victims, and dispose of the victims' bodies,' according to the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office. The folder also contained information about what clothing the girls would wear, including gloves, WTVT reported. In a statement, Andrew Lethbridge, Highlands County’s deputy superintendent, said that students and adults “are all held accountable for the information that we communicate.” “The (school board) takes threats very seriously and we work closely with the (Sheriff’s Office) to investigate them,” Lethbridge said. “We have stressed the concept that if staff or students hear or see something that concerns them, to please share that information with an adult that can do something about it. In this situation, we witnessed this concept in action. This enables us to be proactive and respond to situations prior to an incident taking place.”
  • The Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium have announced a new, 1-month-old clouded leopard cub. >> Read more trending news Zoo officials said Saya, the mom, gave birth to two cubs, but unfortunately one died shortly after birth. Saya remained attentive to her remaining cub by nursing and grooming her. The zoo said while staff monitored Saya and her cub, they noticed the cub wasn't nursing on her own. Keepers and staff decided to step in after more than 12 hours without the cub nursing. After a veterinary team conducted various tests, the team made the decision to bottle-feed the cub several times a day with a mammal milk supplement containing vitamins and minerals to spur growth and weight gain. Zoo officials said keepers and staff will continue to care for her at the Animal Care Center. According to a release, clouded leopards are listed as endangered, with fewer than 10,000 left in the wild.
