Event DescriptionAtlanta-based photographer Sheila Pree Bright used her Picturing the South commission to explore the verdant and contentious landscape of Stone Mountain. Bright will be in conversation with Dr. Hilary N. Green, associate professor of history at the University of Alabama. Don't miss this conversation that explores Bright's process and ideas behind capturing Confederate monuments in her work.Sheila Pree Bright is a nationally recognized, award-winning photographer. She earned an MFA in Photography from Georgia State University. In 2006, she received the Center Prize from the Santa Fe Center of Photography for Suburbia series. She is often described as a cultural anthropologist for her large-scale works that combine a wide range of contemporary cultures. In addition to being featured in numerous publications, she has exhibited at museums across North America, and her work can be found in private and public collections across the United States. Dr. Hilary N. Green earned her master's and doctorate in history from Tufts University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, respectively. She is the author of Educational Reconstruction: African American Schools in the Urban South, 1865-1890 (Fordham University Press, 2016) as well as articles, book chapters, and other scholarly publications. Currently she is working on her second book, which examines how everyday African Americans remembered and commemorated the Civil War; an OAH-NPS Historic Resource Study on African American Schools in the South, 1865-1900; and, as coeditor with Andrew L. Slap, a volume exploring the Civil War era and the summer of 2020.Sign Language InterpretationThe High Museum strives to make its programs accessible for everyone. Audience members who are not vaccinated must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within seventy-two hours of the talk's start time or a negative COVID-19 antigen test taken within six hours of the talk's start time. Proof of vaccination (or negative test result) must come directly from the healthcare provider that performed the vaccination (or test).
